Fresh air - Tongoy

9 juli 2008 - Calama, Chili

Hello everybody!!

Thank you all so much for your sweet sweet messages, it was really nice of you to take some time to write to me. I really appreciate it. I'm writing this message in the military regiment in Calama, I'm sitting next to a couple of soldiers who are also busy with their laptops, haha. We're staying in the same building as them and it's really cool. The army is very important in Chile, you can see them everywhere and they have a lot of influence too. I've got looots and looots to tell you, but I'm not sure if I can tell it all today.

Last week in Santiago was really nice, but I didn't do a lot, so I don't have much to tell you about that. The weather was really wonderful, it felt like spring and people could walk outside without wearing jackets. In the nights it gets a lot colder though. Last Wednesday I met Alice, a Dutch woman who lives in Santiago and is married to a Chilean guy. It was amazing, we had a wonderful time and we had lots to talk about. She came for lunch and stayed till 4.30 PM or so. We talked in Spanish most of the time, so that Faride and the rest of the family could talk in Spanish too and understand it. It was really great to know what living in Chile is like for her and we really had fun together. I loved it and I hope we can meet again, before I leave Chile, but I won't have that much time, unfortunately. Alice is a really friendly and great woman. She has two little kids, maybe I'll see them before I leave, I don't know. Oh well, on Thursday Oscar came to visit me again and we also had a lovely time together, again. It's absolutely amazing to be able to see him, I still can't really believe all this, me being in Chile, meeting people I only knew over the internet, seeing this country I've always wanted to visit... I love it, I love every minute of it. But, I miss my family a lot too. A month is not so long, so I'll survive. I do know that I'll come back here, maybe in a couple of years.. I will have to come back for my studies anyway. I'd love to live here, but I'd prefer to live in the south or in Santiago, the north is too much desert for me, although it's absolutely stunning too.

On Friday we went to have lunch at the house of Faride's sister. She lives outside Santiago, in a little village where lots of young couples with little kids live. There's no high school, only primary schools. It's a beautiful place though, it looks really peaceful and the houses are very big. The only thing I notice every time, is that they don't have any heating systems in the houses!! You need to keep your jacket on every time, it's kind of weird, but it's normal here. It was really nice to meet Faride's sister, they are very much alike and she was really nice. She had three little kids who were very cute. One of them had her birthday and we had some presents for her. We also ate birthday cake (yummy!!) and sang the Spanish happy birthday song (well, I tried, I tried). In the afternoon we left to Tongoy, which was a couple of hours driving, I think like 400 or 500 km from Santiago. It´s near the sea and it's really a BEAUTIFUL place, with palm trees, beautiful coast... beautiful, beautiful. We stayed in a military appartment, which was situated next to the sea. From the appartment we had a stunning view of the coast and the palm trees below. I will put some pics on the website in the next couple of days ( by the way, there are some new nice pics from the trip to Viña, and I also posted some videos that are worth watching!). We were the only people in the whole "park" (there also were cabins or little houses you could stay in), because it's a little village and it's winter. In summer it's all full of people who go to the famous beaches, like in Viña).

On Saturday we went to visit two star observatories. The Atacama Desert is the driest desert in the world and you can't find anything there. In Tongoy there was also desert, but with some vegetation, there were lots of cactusses.  But, what I wanted to say, the sky here is very very clear and you can see the stars very well. That's why some of the most important observatories in the soutern part of the world are situated here. But, I'll tell you about that another time. I have to go now, so I will finish my story later. As I said before, I've got looots to tell, haha.

Take care everybody and see you all soon!

    Hai Anouk,

I'm back home now, it's 1am here but my biological clock is still ticking the London time. Luckily I've got the LotR musical CD with me to get through the night - it's simply BeauTiFul!

Hope you continue to have a great great time in Chile! Look forward to the next part of your story.

    Hoi Anouk,
